A Cranial Osteopath states:
"One of the most interesting things to come from the Osteopathic world are visceral techniques developed by Jean Pier Barral. He does extensive research in his institute and was voted by time magazine as one of the most significant people of the 20th century."
Not quite. Time Magazine in 2001, in a series of short articles, inviting readers to nominate people they think might be important for the future. Of course, in the "Alternative Medicine" category, crackpots nominated themselves. The Time articles said Barral was a person in the altmed world to watch, along with several other cranks. One can certainly agree with that…
The mention of Jean-Pierre Barral warrants explanation.
Barral was known in crackpot circles for his astonishing revolutionary assertions that internal organs move 30,000 times a day. The liver alone travels 600 metres through the body every day, he claims, and should be coaxed into its proper place through massage and stern admonition.
Barral "discovered" the "visceral technique" by watching Swiss rural peasant "bone setters" treat fellow villagers and cows by kneading their visceral organs. Barral then attended and graduated from the quacky European School of Osteopathy, in England (where ridiculous altmed techniques such as "cranial osteopathy" are also taught with a straight face).
The idea behind this "visceral technique" is that spacial disharmony among the various internal organs causes tension which precipitates disease and dysfunction. It is the Visceral Osteopath’s duty to discern dislocations in the natural rhythm and "fluidity forces" of the visceral system (heart, liver, intestines, etc), and bring these imbalances into…well…"balance". At all times a visceral practitioner must show respect to the liver. Improper visceral manipulation is what causes Brewster Rockit’s friend Winky to scream "AHHHH! MY SPLEEN! — usually due to some ridiculous imposition by Dr. Mel Practice.
Barral’s theories have had exactly zero influence on modern medicine. He is dismissed by everyone except other ill-trained cranks.
What is it about UK-trained osteopaths which leave them so gullible to every quack imposture, from Cranial Therapy, to Homeopathy, to Therapeutic Touch, and now Visceral Techniques? Do they get no training in the scientific method at all??
